Abstract—A mass smart meter roll-out represents a vast challenge concerning the performing of the corresponding installation processes. Starting from the hypothesis that meter operators would be able to successfully implement a mass smart meter roll-out in Germany under the current conditions, we show that a determined lack of process support by information and communication technology (ICT) indicates that the thesis has to be rejected. In this context, we introduce the Smart Meter Installation Management (SMIM) as a cloud-based approach for improving the capability of smart meter installation processes by use of advanced ICT. The following German-specific results refer to conducted field observations and workshops and will now be presented to the international community.
